Fans of Offshore Powerboat Racing will get an unexpected thrill this
June, as the APBA Offshore Racing Association’s GMC Pro Grade Tour
plans a stop in the City of Port Huron.
The competition racecourse will run from the Lakeside Park area to the
North approximately four miles, and fans along the shore will be thrilled
racing action on both days, showcasing power in excess of up to 180+ miles
per hour on the circle track. The APBA Offshore Racing Association plans
an Online broadcast, so fans can tune in on their computers to listen
in from their waterfront homes.
Teams from across the country will begin arriving in town as early as
Thursday, in the pursuit of a checkered flag finish, and additional points
toward the prestigious APBA Offshore GMC Pro Grade National Title. The
National Titleholder in each class will also be inducted into the legendary
100+ year old American Power Boat Association (APBA) Hall of Champions.
The stop in Port Huron is the second stop on the seven race series Tour.
The 2004 APBA Offshore GMC Pro Grade Port Huron Gran Prix events will
include FREE ADMISSION by all fans to the Race Village Dry Pits at McMorran
Place, courtesy of the City of Port Huron. Host Hotel for the event is
the Comfort Inn of Port Huron.
The McMorran Place Race Village Dry Pits will stage a display millions
of dollars of high tech racing boats from 24’ to 46’, and
fans are encouraged to take pictures, meet the teams, and see the equipment
up close. Race Village will be open on Friday and Saturday from 9:00am
to 8:00pm, and on Sunday from 9:00am until 6:00pm.
A beer tent and food and beverage concessions will be offered for fans
to enjoy. Vendor and craft booth spaces are offered for any local merchant
wishing to promote their business or sell their wares.
“You can slide your hand down the side of a million dollar racing
boat, with a $50,000 paint scheme, and over $100,000 in engine power under
the hatch. It’s a treat that no boating enthusiast will want to
miss. We can’t thank the City of Port Huron, McMorran Place, the
Blue Water Convention Center and the local businesses enough for their
support of this event,” said Michelle May – Schmidt, Director
of Communications for the APBA Offshore Racing Association.
