"We
had a heart wrenching moment in the Ft. Lauderdale race when we sheared
off a trim
tab at the end of the first lap," reported Nigel Hook, Captain of
the #7 Lucas Oil Scarab.
"We had such a good top three start, but when
the inside tab broke, I
knew
our
day
was
done.
We
hung
in there,
and with the fierce level of competition in the Super Vee class we slid
back to finish eventually in 7th place."
The Ft. Lauderdale Grand Prix attracted close to 60 race boats from all
across the country and raised tens of thousands of dollars for Kids in
Distress— part of the 2003 Child SMILE America. Racers, sponsors, and
fans alike pitched in to make this a huge win, led by the tireless
hard work of Michelle May-Schmidt. The biggest winners
were the children
in need.
